Description
Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (BCMSN) is recommended training for individuals seeking certification as a Cisco Certified Network Professional or for those that want to create efficient and expandable enterprise networks using Cisco Catalyst switches. This course enables learners to implement appropriate technologies to build scalable multilayer switched networks; create and deploy a global intranet, and implement basic troubleshooting techniques in environments that use Cisco multilayer switches for client hosts and services. The BCMSN course will also enable learners to improve traffic flow, reliability, redundancy, and performance for LAN switching that are self-supported or transported via service providers.

Skills Taught
Upon completion of the Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (BCMSN) course, the student will be able to:
  • Use the Campus Infrastructure module of the ECNM to deploy an efficient and expandable enterprise network
  • Define VLANs to segment network traffic and manage network utilization
  • Implement the Spanning Tree Protocol to accelerate network traffic convergence in Layer 2
  • Troubleshoot spanning tree and identify enhancements provided by Rapid Spanning Tree and Multiple Spanning Tree
  • Implement multilayer switching to enable high-data throughput communication between isolated VLANs
  • Implement redundancy in the ECNM, specifically at Layer 3, to improve and ensure end-to-end availability of network services
  • Secure switches in the Campus Infrastructure module against data theft and service loss in the event of network compromise
  • Configure the campus switches to optimize traffic flow when voice, video, and data applications traverse a single converged network


Audience
The primary audiences for Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks are network administrators and technicians who are responsible for implementing or troubleshooting a multilayer switched network in an enterprise environment, CCNP and CCDP candidates, CCIE candidates, System Engineers, Account Managers, Channel Partners/Resellers.

Prerequisites
The BCMSN course focuses on the technology required for enabling multilayer switched networks. To fully benefit from this course, the student must be familiar with general networking concepts and have Cisco device operation and configuration experience. In addition, the course requires an understanding of TCP/IP and routing protocols, standard and extended access lists, basic switch operations, basic switch configurations, and VLAN/STP basic knowledge. Successful completion of the following courses (or equivalent experience) is strongly recommended:
  • Introduction to Cisco Networking Technologies (INTRO)
  • Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices (ICND)
